The Liver as a Portal

Getting one step closer to our intuition and our inner power, open imagination and elevated state of mind, means taking a closer look at our liver. And more importantly, taking action to nourish and care for it – every single day.

Why the liver — and not any other organ, like the heart, the brain, or the kidneys? Think of the liver as the body’s central laboratory — a master processor that carries out hundreds of chemical functions every day. It breaks down nutrients, converts them into usable forms, produces bile to support digestion, regulates blood sugar, processes hormones, and filters toxins from the bloodstream. This nonstop work influences everything from our immune system and metabolism to hormonal balance and brain function — the very systems that shape how we feel, respond, and move through the world. The way we think, focus, and relate is closely tied to how well our body is functioning. Physical, emotional, and spiritual health are deeply intertwined — and the liver sits at the center of that connection.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the spirit of the liver is called ‘The Hun’. A symbolic representation of our vital, authentic essence. The Hun is all about vision and dreams. It is our connection to a higher thought processes. The Hun help us transform intangible insights into practical plans. In a way, it is a grounded part of us, that can gather our abstract ideas into visible forms. With it, we are able to construct and actualize effective plans with ease, and have a clear sense of direction.

This vital organ doesn’t work in isolation — it’s constantly responding to the world we live in. We are standing up against a lot, environmentally speaking. We’re moving through a world saturated with invisible burdens — many of which never existed just a few generations ago. Plastic residues, heavy metals, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, gasoline byproducts, pharmaceutical traces — and the list goes on.

These substances accumulate quietly, showing up in our air, food, water, and even personal care products. A little bit here, a little bit there – they add up. And every day, the liver steps in to protect us — filtering, neutralizing, and buffering the effects of these exposures.

The liver is the guardian. The protector. The one that takes the hit so the rest of the body can function. But even the most resilient system has its limits — and when the liver is overwhelmed, it needs our support.

The liver has a lot to do with our emotional landscape too, and it’s a two-way street. Emotions impact the liver, and a sluggish liver can cloud our emotional clarity. Experiences like broken trust, family or financial stress, not feeling heard or understood, heartbreak, or fear can trigger the adrenal glands to release corrosive adrenaline — a chemical response that not only lowers immunity but also floods the liver and interferes with its natural function.

It’s natural to seek insight and clarity through medical testing. However, common tests designed to evaluate liver health, like standard blood panels, often fail to detect early or low-grade dysfunctions. A liver can be under tremendous strain long before traditional markers like ALT or AST levels show abnormalities.

Rather than relying solely on test results, it’s essential to tune into the bigger picture: how we feel, the energy we have, and how easily we navigate our days.

Caring for the liver should not wait for a diagnosis — it’s a daily act of strengthening and protecting the body’s most loyal defender.

To maintain high energy, sharp intellect, and stable emotions, we need to support the liver with what it truly needs. While supplements can be helpful, the most powerful foundation starts with the right foods. Think artichokes, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, Atlantic sea vegetables, broccoli, Zucchini, winter squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cilantro, hot peppers, radishes, cranberries, kiwis, pineapples, pitaya. These vibrant foods are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and critical nutrients that cleanse, protect, and nourish the liver. Every meal can become a boost for your body’s vital powerhouse.

Along with nourishing foods, small daily choices protect the liver’s healing process. It’s not always about doing more — often, it’s the quiet decisions that matter most. Choosing when to engage, when to step back, and when to simply rest is a key part of maintaining physical homeostasis. It’s not a sign of weakness, but of connection. Protecting your peace protects your liver. Giving yourself permission to pause before reacting, to step away from unnecessary emotional storms, and to carve out true rest time helps prevent unnecessary adrenaline surges that burden the liver. These small behavioral shifts create a steady inner environment where the liver — and with it, your clarity, vitality, and resilience — can truly thrive.
